The hospital has played a pivotal role in pushing U.S. pediatric cancer survival rates from 20 to 80 percent overall, and is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. It is also a leader in the research and treatment of blood disorders and infectious diseases in children. St. Jude was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, who believed that no child should die in the dawn of life. Southern Living Idea House, Nashville TN: Porches
Southern Living editor, Lindsay Bierman, and interior designer Phoebe Howard, took us on an exclusive tour of the home. Visitors are most intrigued by the miniature versions of the main farmhouse. Called “bunkies” and located on each side of the courtyard, the spaces are infused with the his-and-hers personalities of husband-wife fabric designers Peter Fasano and Elizabeth Hamilton. The foundation elements are the same, but hers has a pretty blue-and-white palette and his speaks in a decidedly masculine voice with darker wood finishes. You’ll also see Lily Natural Alpaca fur pillows in the “his bunkie” and cow hide rugs in the guest cottage.
Every year, Southern Living selects a project team to develop one “Idea House” that inspires consumers to experiment in their homes and gardens. We put together an all-star team to design the ultimate Nashville house. Mimicking an old farmhouse, the main house revolves around one large living room flanked by a hardworking kitchen on one end that boasts a laundry room with enviable laundry room shelving. The exterior boasts a wraparound front porch with extra-deep porch swings and completely a separate rear-dining porch that is connected to the living room and dining room. Outside the main house, Historical Concepts designed several guest houses and bunkies each with their own kitchenette and porch so that company could have their own privacy.
The Back Porch
The chevron design of the wood door dates back centuries. The pattern keeps the door stable and sheds water to prevent warping.

Bathing the kitchen in color creates a cozy, friendly feel. "The one thing I had to have was white knobs," says Phoebe. Cable railings wrap the porches off of every room to allow for clear lines of vision to the stunning gardens below. Windows with 4 over 4 divided lights are often seen on historic farmhouses, so the team carried them throughout each structure for a consistent look. Staff can help you secure a table at a hard-to-book Nashville restaurant, such as Husk, or last-minute tickets to a show at the Grand Ole Opry. (Two of the suites are pet-friendly.) If you want to go to town, the innkeepers can easily arrange car service into Nashville. Tile is a pretty and practical choice for the light-filled laundry room. For interest on the walls, Phoebe used two colors of the same small mosaic tile (Straight Chisai; annsacks.com) in wide stripes. Spool beds became popular with American furniture makers in the mid 19th century.
The Guest House Porch
Gorgeous vistas, expansive porches, soaring ceilings with antique barn wood beams, and clerestory windows caught our eye during the first visit to the nation’s only 2013 Southern Living Idea House at Fontanel. In our second look, great design elements which can be easily adapted grabbed our attention. The gardens create a sense of welcome as visitors enter the property. Plants and shrubs create a sequence of movement through the entry and into the courtyard. We had a lot of fun touring the house and out buildings and then Vicki and I took off for the Fontanel tour and again, I’ll tell you all about that later. It’s right up the road from the ideahouse and Fontanel is now open as a tourist destination, since the Mandrell family sold it a few years ago.

Each of the six bedrooms of the five-building Idea House project has its own distinct style. In the master, retreat is a reproduction spool bed from Howard’s line of furniture, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Collection by Sherrill Furniture. The soft, welcoming retreat features Olympus White walls and Ice Cube color on the ceiling. An all-Sherwin Williams home, the color choices throughout are detailed in the Resource Guide available in the garage where you’ll also find current copies of Nashville House & Home & Garden magazine.
You can see those beautiful shades that pull up and down for sun control. It’s a gorgeous house, but we were only allowed to take photos of a few areas, but had full reign outside, so you’ll see lots of pics of the outside. For those who didn’t know, the Southern Living Idea House is located on the property of Fontanel, former home of country music legend, Barbara Mandrell. After months of hard work and inspired design, the NashvilleSouthern Living Idea House is officially open to the public!

The subtle color palette of the porch furniture blends with the rustic views surrouding the house. Again, because Southern Living will be covering the house in the August issue this year, we couldn’t take pics of all rooms, but did get to do a preview of the dining room and guesthouse. This is the well-lit dining room, simple and spacious.
