Sheer cafe curtains, hung just above the bottom sash, give softness and privacy while still allowing a view of the outside and inviting lots of sunlight to stream in through the upper panes. Taken from an early-1900s Tennessee barn, the knotty boards of the custom sliding barn doors add rustic texture against the smooth painted walls. Phoebe used plenty of warm wood antiques to give the new upholstered furniture groupings a sense of age and patina.

The subtle color palette of the porch blends with the rustic views surrouding the guest house. Ample seating allows for a comfortable perch for visitors. Front and back doors open directly into a two-story-high living room, where spruce-planked walls and wood beams salvaged from an 1890 Tennessee barn reflect the home's rural setting and give the space a refined, barnlike feel. Interior decorator Phoebe Howard balanced the rustic elements with color. "I added an air of elegance with a soft color palette that reflects the surrounding sky and hills," she says.

Each of the six bedrooms of the five-building Idea House project has its own distinct style. In the master, retreat is a reproduction spool bed from Howard’s line of furniture, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Collection by Sherrill Furniture. The soft, welcoming retreat features Olympus White walls and Ice Cube color on the ceiling. An all-Sherwin Williams home, the color choices throughout are detailed in the Resource Guide available in the garage where you’ll also find current copies of Nashville House & Home & Garden magazine.

On the spacious wrap around porch, there were several seating areas and this beautiful hanging swing. You can see all the beautiful landscaping that was done at the house. From the front and side of the Ideahouse, a pond was also built. It’s in a picturesque valley with a mountain in the background and such a beautiful area for this home.

Castle Homes earned the coveted 2012 Southern Living Custom Builder of the Year for their exceptional home building. Founded in 1992, Castle Homes is a top Nashville-based design-build company producing impeccable homes with a guaranteed price – unique to the Middle Tennessee building industry. This Southern Living Idea House is more of a complex than a single home – it’s a farmhouse that connects to several small guest houses, or “bunkies,” by covered porches for easy access in all weather conditions.

It’s farmhouse in feel, with a huge wrap around porch that connects all the buildings. The new Southern Living ideahouse has just opened to the public and will be open the rest of the year, so if you get a chance, you must go and tour it. A portion of the proceeds go to the St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital, which is a great cause.

Duke aesthetic employs classical theory with an emphasis on historical precedent. We seek sustainable solutions that minimize our impact on the environment. "It's appropriate that I found my house in the same way I find a lot of my furniture—online," says Brittney Forrister of the home she saw for sale on Facebook. The buzz around Nashville's up-and-coming Woodbine neighborhood had sparked her interest, but what sealed the deal? "Every time I walk into a house and see built-in shelves, I'm sold. I love and live in books," she says.

Off the clock, find her strolling through Birmingham neighborhoods looking at houses and snapping photos of colorful front doors. A separate entrance from the porch opens directly into the hardworking mudroom with its pairs of custom open built-ins and closed closets that provide ample space for open and hidden storage. "The wrapped covered porch is the key to this entire design because it provides the connectivity from space to space," says Terry.

It was a treat to see Lindsay again, I love talking to him and never miss his letter at the beginning of each month in the magazine. Everyone at Fontanel was so friendly and welcomed us all in. It’s such a treat to get to meet them all at events like this.

This bedroom's impressive example, which is from the Mr. and Mrs. Howard collection by Sherrill Furniture, combines graceful spools, four tall posts , and a pretty painted finish. The Idea House is open Wednesdays through Sundays with a portion of the proceeds benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Be sure and visit Southern Living’s site for great details on the house including a creative series of videos.

The Dining Room

I was honored to be invited to a preview showing last week with a selected group of successful bloggers from the area. Brittney adores the hat-lady print, though she's not fond of its colors. "Even things you don't love can work in the right space," she says. She painted the walls in Farrow & Ball's Calamine (No. 230).

On the edge of the property, two miniature versions of the main house serve as a visual gateway into the compound. Known affectionately as "the bunkies," the houses mimic each other inside and out and offer every comfort that a guest could want. Both have a porch just right for a cafe table, a cozy bedroom with two indulgent queen beds, a petite kitchenette, and a full bath. On the first floor, rich brown walls and a combination of neutral fabrics carry out a warm mushroom-and-ivory color palette.

Birmingham, AL – The Southern Living Idea House at Fontanel respects historic tradition and reflects timeless Southern style. The home was inspired by a 150 year-old Middle Tennessee farmhouse in Leipers Fork, and designed with guests in mind, on a cozy, comfortable scale. The décor is inviting with its warm, neutral palette and use of reclaimed wood beams and antiques. The garden is meant to welcome guests, while the “weekend project gardens” help solve common gardening dilemmas.

Also, several other bloggers covered the house and it was so good to see them all, including Dana Tucker, Blonde Mom Blog, The Decorologist, and LLH Designs. Met up with the Ballard Designs gang and it’s always fun to hang out with them too. They are one of our big sponsors at Haven this year and we can’t wait for that either. The big wrap around porch came in handy, with many spilling into the courtyard.
